Working in İstanbul, assigned at İstanbul Provincial Security Directorate and the Anti-Terror Branch during the coup attempt on the evening of July 15th, Police Officer Serdar Gökbayrak became a martyr during the attempted coup.
Serdar, was on duty, as tried to enter the Arnavutköy Topkule Barracks with special operations forces and soldiers at the time of the coup attempt, when he was martyred by gun shots.
Speaking with his brother Soner around 04:00, Serdar said, “It is likely that they will start surrendering in the morning.” Before being able to see putschists surrender in the morning, he was injured during the conflicts with the putschist traitors at around 05:15 on the night of July 15th. Serdar was taken to a hospital and became a martyr there. Hoping to become a martyr, 45-year old Serdar Gökbayrak was laid to rest with a funeral ceremony attended by almost 5 thousand people in Derince, Kocaeli. His daughters, 17-year-old Ceyda and 16-year-old Elif, burst into tears while his 11-year-old son Alperen attended the funeral with a military uniform.
Serdar Gökbayrak’s funeral was brought to his hometown of Hanlı Village, Sakarya.
