Deputy Inspector Seher Yaşar and his fiancée, police officer Halil Gürsel, went on to become one of the saddest stories that came out of the coup attempt because they were martyred on their engagement night.
Deputy Inspector Seher Yaşar, who worked in the Gölbaşı Special Operations Department Headquarters in Ankara, and police officer Halil Gürsel were going to get engaged with an engagement ceremony on the night of July 15th. After learning of the coup attempt, their supervisors called the couple, who were both home from work. Halil Gürsel called Yaşar and headed to the Gölbaşı Special Operations Department Headquarters.
Yaşar talked to his father on the phone 15 minutes before he was martyred. He was only able to say, “I’ll call you later,” as he was preparing to fight the putschists. This was the last time he would speak with his father. A group of terrorists in uniforms flew fighter jets from the Diyarbakır 8th Main Jet Base and started dropping bombs on the Special Operations Department Headquarters. The couple resisted against the putschists together and were martyred along with many of their colleagues.
The 25 year old Deputy Inspector Seher Yaşar was buried in the Polatlı district of Ankara on July 18th.
