Recep Gündüz, was martyred after being targeted by putschists’ bullets on the night of the July 15th coup attempt. He was on the Martyrs Bridge and was chanting ‘God is the greatest’ at the time he was martyred.
Recep was a plumber. He was at a close location to the Bosphorus Bridge on the day of July 15th. That night he went to the bridge with two friends as soon as he heard about the treacherous coup attempt, after performing his prayers. He called his family who were in Erzincan at the time and told his mother, “Tell my father not to go out.”
He was shot with a G3 bullet in between his legs at midnight and was taken to the hospital heavily wounded. On the way to a hospital, he kept asking the state of the policeman that was shot at the exact same moment as him. Before he drew his last breath, he recited God’s name and asked for his blessings, then became a martyr.
Twenty-seven-year-old Recep Gündüz was buried on July 18th, after his funeral ceremony. The name Martyr Recep Gündüz was given to an Anatolian imam hatip high school in his hometown of Tercan, Erzincan.
