Özgür Gençer ran to the Presidential Complex in Beştepe after hearing about the traitorous coup attempt. He was martyred by the bomb attack on the Presidential Complex.
Gençer headed to Presidential Complex saying, “This time I’ll go, mother,” to his mother who said “Son, don’t go.” Gençer had two children, aged 3 and 8. He was martyred by the bomb that was dropped in front of the Millet Mosque during the morning prayer.
The martyr had been constantly communicating with his brother Şener Gençer who joined the resistance at a different spot. The two brothers sent photographs and videos to each other about where they were. Özgür Gençer was martyred by the bomb dropped near Beştepe. His watch was displaced from his arm as he fell on the ground after the bombing. The watch stopped at 06:20, so that was the time of his martyrdom.
The 31 year old Gençer was buried with a state funeral that was held in Ankara Kocatepe Mosque on July 18th.
