Ömer Cankatar, who resisted against the coup attempt in front of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Building where putschist soldiers attacked on July 15th, was the target of the putschist’s bullets. The 33 year old Cankatar was martyred on the spot.
Cankatar went to stand up against the putschists after hearing the call of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. He was shot within 30 minutes after he went to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Building. Cankatar told his mother, “Mom, I hope I am martyred with a single bullet.” He reached the martyrdom he wished for and was buried in the Edirnekapı Martyrs’ Graveyard.
He provided for his family
Ömer Cankatar was born and raised in Fatih, Istanbul. He completed his education there as well. Cankatar, who studied accounting in a vocational high school, provided for his family by having an internship 2 days a week and attending school 3 days a week. He lived with his mother and siblings and provided for his family’s needs. The martyr’s mother, Atike Yağmur, described her son as “helpful and fearless” and said that her son had been looking for work for a couple of months.
