Fatih Satır, 26 years old, was martyred after being shot in front of the Borsa Istanbul building, where he resisted against putschists on the night of July 15th. A Turkish flag that was in his possession when he was shot is the only thing left of him.
Satır learned about the coup attempt from his friends, who tried to stop him from going but his response was, “I’m going. I’m not going to let a bunch of looters steal my country.” When Fatih’s father was told about the coup attempt he involuntarily exclaimed, “Maybe a martyr will come out of our house too.” His sister did not want Fatih to go into the streets. His father who was witnessing all the martyrs going out said, “Let him go. Who is going to save the country?”
His last words: I love you very much
Turan Satır called his son around 01:43 a.m. During the phone call, Fatih Satır said to his father, “There’s no turning back from this, father. I will be a martyr. I love you very much.” These were his last words. 20 minutes after the phone call between father and son, Fatih Satır’s big brother Osman Satır shared the news of his brother’s martyrdom saying, “Father, they shot my brother. They took him to the hospital.”
The martyr Fatih Satır dreamed of being a pilot in the Turkish Aeronautical Association. He was on his way to accomplishing his dream, as he had completed all the necessary exams except for one that would have led to his interview.
“I will never let the flag covered in blood be washed”
Satır said that his oldest son Osman is a construction engineer and his younger son Fatih is a computer engineer. He added that his son is very brave and cannot find words to describe Fatih. Turan Satır continued, saying, “This is my son’s flag. It was on his chest when he was shot. What do people die for? For their flag, country, and honor. He went to save his country, flag, and honor. He was martyred. I will never let the blood on this flag be washed.”
“I’m proud to sacrifice my son for my country”
Satır said he talked on the phone with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at his son’s funeral and expressed his sincere feelings, “Erdoğan has a big heart. He put his life on the line for his people, nation, and flag. Didn’t President Erdoğan get in a plane and come to his people on that night? Didn’t he call his people into the streets? If it were not for his faith and sincerity, would people put themselves in danger? Shame on the people who call him a ‘dictator’. Our love united us. I’m proud to sacrifice my son for my country. I can sacrifice myself for my country as well. There are thousands of people who would die for their country now like Fatih.”
The name of Martyr Fatih Satır was given to an Anatolian Imam Hatip high school in Sarıyer, Istanbul.
