Terrorists used IED to target police vehicle in Lower Dir district near Afghan border, say police

Two police officers were killed and two others wounded Thursday in an explosion in the northern Lower Dir district of Pakistan near the border with Afghanistan, police said

“Terrorists targeted the police vehicle with an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Sori Paw Maiden area of the Lower Dir district, killed Bakht Munair, local station house officer and his driver while two other officers got injured,” Gul Habib, a local police officer told Anadolu Agency over the phone.

The injured police personnel, in critical condition, were taken to the Lal Qilla hospital, he added.

Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militants group, claimed responsibility for the attack.

The district of Dir, bordering the eastern Kunar province of Afghanistan, was once the stronghold of Taliban militant groups. The area was cleared after a military operation in 2009 and hundreds of militants fled to the border areas of Afghanistan.

Pakistani authorities claimed those who fled established hideouts in the Afghanistan, from where they carry out attacks in Pakistan.
