Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu warned Greece on Tuesday that Ankara didn't want it to become a "safe haven" for FETÖ terrorists who plotted last year's coup attempt, citing the 995 people who have applied for asylum since the failed coup.
Speaking at a joint news conference with his Greek counterpart, Nikos Kotzias, Çavuşoğlu said the asylum seekers needed to be evaluated to determine those linked to the network of the U.S.-based Fetullah Gülen, who orchestrated Turkey's July 15 coup attempt.
FETÖ terrorists are led by Gülen, who is the mastermind behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary.
Since the failed coup, operations have been ongoing in the military, police and judiciary as well as in state institutions across the country to arrest suspects with alleged links to FETÖ.
The terrorist group is also known for its network comprised of hundreds of schools around the world.
