Leaders of Association of Southeast Asian Nations hold 46th annual summit in Malaysian capital, adopt declaration which envisions path for next 20 years

The Southeast Asian nations on Monday adopted the Kuala Lumpur Declaration, envisioning a path for the next 20 years, navigating rapid technological shifts, climate imperatives, and rising geopolitical complexities.

The declaration, ASEAN 2045: Our Shared Vision, was adopted at the 46th annual summit of the bloc held in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

This “historic document sets the course for ASEAN's next two decades, envisioning a resilient, innovative, dynamic and people-centered community that stands as the epicenter of growth in the Indo-Pacific,” said Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim during the signing ceremony.

Malaysia is the current chair of the 10-member bloc.

The Kuala Lumpur Declaration is “anchored on six strategic plans covering political security, economy, socio-cultural development and connectivity,” said Anwar.

“It calls for deeper integration, stronger institutions, and inclusive growth that uplifts every segment of society, especially women, youth, and vulnerable communities,” he noted in a brief statement on Facebook.

“With the Kuala Lumpur Declaration, we are … forging a legacy of unity, purpose and shared destiny for ASEAN. The work ahead is immense, but so is our resolve to build a region that is secure, sustainable and proudly ASEAN.”

“Bold in ambition and grounded in purpose,” Anwar said, the declaration charts their "collective path through rapid technological shifts, climate imperatives and rising geopolitical complexities.”

Addressing the bloc's leaders ahead of the signing ceremony, Anwar said the evolving technologies “carry risks” and if “left unmanaged, they may deepen inequality, displace livelihoods, and outpace our rules.”

“We must not only embrace innovation, we must learn to govern it together and with care,” he said in his address, according to the Free Malaysia Today News website.

Describing the new vision as “a shared blueprint,” the Malaysian prime minister said that “it was anchored in realism, animated by resolve, and made possible by trust.”
