An elderly British man who has lived in Turkey for 14 years converted to Islam after getting to know Islamic traditions and customs during his stay in the country.
Cliff Peter Barber, 72, recited the Islamic proclamation of faith, or Shahadah, in the city of Fethiye, in Turkey’s coastal Muğla province, where he has been residing for the past 14 years.
Peter elected to adopt the Muslim name of “Jameel,” saying to journalists following the ceremony that he “fell in love with the religion after reading about Prophet Muhammad and Islam,” which prompted him to convert.
He was gifted a copy of the Holy Quran and other religious books by the Department of Religious Affairs in the province.
