Information minister tells journalists about trip following Cabinet meeting in Beirut
The Lebanese information minister said Tuesday that a government delegation, headed by Prime Minister Najib Mikati, will soon visit Syria.
Ziad Makary's remarks came in a statement to journalists following a Cabinet meeting at government headquarters in Beirut, that was chaired by Mikati.
"There will be an upcoming visit to Syria headed by Prime Minister Najib Mikati, but the date has not yet been set,” said Makary.
He noted that Mikati confirmed during the session that he agreed with the head of the new Syrian administration, Ahmad al-Sharaa, in a telephone call last Friday, to maintain communication in the interests of Lebanon, Syria and the region.
Al-Sharaa had extended an invitation to Mikati at the conclusion of the call to visit Syria to discuss joint issues and strengthen bilateral relations.
The Lebanon-Syria border, spanning 375 kilometers (233 miles), features rugged terrain with no clear demarcation in many areas. While six official border crossings exist, the region remains porous, with frequent activity at unauthorized routes.
