Sultan Selim Karakoç went out onto the streets as soon as he heard about the malicious coup attempt on the night of July 15th but came back home after forgetting to perform ablution and say goodbye to his wife. Later that night he became a martyr as he was killed by a bomb dropped by the putschists in front of the General Staff building in Kızılay.
Sultan fought putschists until the early morning. His phone ran out of battery and went dead, therefore his family could not reach him. His family went to Kızılay to find him at 09:30 on the morning of July 16th. Charging his phone at the hospital, authorities called his wife and asked her to come over with her husband’s identity card. She went to the hospital with her family and was able to identify her late husband’s body.
Married and father of three children, 42-year-old, Sultan Selim Karakoç had bravely survived a brain tumor at one point in his life.
Originally from Rize, Sultan is one of the 10 martyrs from Rize. He was buried in Karşiyaka Martyrs’ Cemetery.
