“I thought he went to be a soldier. I thought he would come back on holiday”
Martyr Takdemir was 20 years old. He was the middle child of his family and worked in a private company. Takdemir, who joined the 9 other martyrs in Kazan, was going to be a soldier in a very short time. Takdemir was at a wedding during the coup attempt. He went outside after he heard President Erdoğan’s call and headed to Akıncı Air Base at 11:30 PM after receiving permission from his father. He frequently called and informed his father about the situation. When he was shot in the Akıncı Air Base, his last words were, “I’m shot”. He died a martyr’s death when he arrived at the hospital.
The martyr was buried in Ankara on Saturday, July 16th. Satı Takdemir (70), grandmother of Ömer Takdemir, lamented when visiting his son’s graveyard, “I thought you went to be a soldier. I thought you would come back on holiday. The holiday has begun and you are not back son, my Ömer.” Ms. Takdemir said, “I can’t believe he is dead. I thought he went to be a soldier but what can we do? We are devastated but also proud. The red flag was waved by my grandson Ömer.”
The name of martyr Ömer Takdemir was given to an Anatolian Imam Hatip high school in his hometown of Ankara.
