July 15 Coup Attempt Ömer İpek

Ömer İpek

Going in front of the Ankara Security Directorate to stand up against the coup attempt of FETÖ and being martyred by the putschists, 34-year-old, Ömer İpek left behind his 4-month-old twins. He told his wife on the evening of July 15th, “I will become a martyr, the children are under your responsibility,” and left home.

Father of twins, İpek was the first person to be shot by treacherous putschists in front of the Ankara Security Directorate. Not paying attention to his parents’ warnings of ‘do not go out,’ he still went out and jumped in front of the tanks.

Ömer had been married to Zeynep İpek for 10 years. His twins were only 4 months old. He supported his family by working in the advertising business.

Döndü İpek, the sister of Ömer İpek, the July 15 martyr who was killed by putschists who opened fire in front of the Ankara Security Directorate, said, “Before he left, Ömer said to my father, 'I want to leave a beautiful country to my children. I am going there to be a martyr. I leave my children to you, father.'”
On the 15th, Ömer got in between the police and the putschists, and was shot in the head. He became the first martyr to be shot in front of the Ankara Security Directorate, walked out of his home saying ‘I will be a martyr’ and never come back.

Stating that he ran after his son, Ömer’s father couldn’t get to him. He said that he went out to the General Staff building and added that he could not find his son. Learning that his son was shot after ten minutes, the father found his son who was murdered treacherously by the putschists in a hospital’s morgue.

Martyr Ömer İpek was buried in Etimesgut, Ankara.
