İzzet Özkan ran out onto the streets without any hesitation on the night when FETÖ members attempted a coup. Özkan went to the Presidential Complex without telling his mother so that she wouldn’t stop him. He talked to his wife 10 minutes before he was shot.
Özkan headed to the Presidential Complex and called his wife at 12:30 AM, “If something happens to me, renounce your rights for me and take care of our 3 children.” 10 minutes after this phone call, putschist soldiers started shooting at the civilians in front of the Presidential Complex. He was shot in the first round of shooting. Then the helicopter attacks began. He was once again the target of the putschist soldiers’ bullets. He was taken to the hospital severely injured and died a martyr’s death in the morning.
His uncle was the first one heard about Özkan’s martyrdom. Özkan’s uncle called his wife and told her about the situation. After being received from forensics, he was buried in Karşıyaka Graveyard on July 17th.
The 33-year-old was originally from Eskişehir and was married with 3 children.
The name of Martyr İzzet Özkan was given to an elementary school in Etimesgut, Ankara.
