Cemal Demir, who found out about the events on the night of July 15th and also that people were being martyred, said, “How nice that people became martyrs, I wish we could too.” He was also martyred on the Bosphorus Bridge by putschists on the same night.
Sixty-seven- year-old carpenter, Cemal found himself in the middle of conflicts while he was traveling from Bilecik to İstanbul with his son Yusuf, on the night of the July 15th coup attempt. He went to the Bosphorus Bridge and carried a policeman shot by traitors near a riot control vehicle. Martyred by the shots fired from tanks at the riot control vehicle, his body was later found by his family at the Siyami Ersek Hospital.
Married for 50 years, father of three, Demir’s funeral was held in the Eyüp Mosque.
The name Martyr Cemal Demir was given to an imam hatip high school located in Çanakkale.
