Going to the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge to resist coup plotters, Burhan Öner became a martyr when a tank bullet exploded near him. Öner left two children behind.
Burhan was at home with his son on the night of July 15th while his wife was away in Ayvalık. Kamile Öner called her husband at 02:00, her son picked up the phone and said that his father had performed ablution and prayer and then had started reading from the Quran. After he prayed and read from the Quran, Burhan said to his wife and son, “This is not a night to sleep, are we not living in honor and dignity? How can I go to sleep?” and he then ran towards the bridge.
Kamile was informed, by Burhan's brother-in-law that Burhan was wounded. He died a martyr after a tank bullet landed near him. He was buried on Saturday, July 16th.
Martyr Burhan Öner’s name was given to an elementary school located in Maltepe, Istanbul and also the Sülüntepe Sports Arena located in Pendik, Istanbul.
