Leaders discuss need to build on common interests shared by neighboring countries
The head of Syria's new administration Ahmed Al-Sharaa extended his congratulations to Joseph Aoun on his election as Lebanon's president during a phone call on Sunday, according to the Syrian state news agency SANA.
During the conversation, Sharaa expressed his best wishes to President Aoun for success in his new role emphasizing the importance of strengthening the positive relationship between Syria and Lebanon.
The two leaders also discussed the need to build on the common interests shared by the neighboring countries.
The Lebanese parliament elected Joseph Aoun as the country's 14th president on Thursday, ending a two-year power vacuum. Aoun secured the position with 99 votes out of 128 members.
According to the Lebanese Constitution, the president must be a Maronite Christian, the prime minister a Sunni Muslim, and the parliamentary speaker a Shia Muslim.
