During phone call, UAE president congratulates Joseph Aoun on his election as president
The president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on Saturday agreed with his Lebanese counterpart Joseph Aoun on taking "necessary steps to reopen the UAE Embassy in Beirut."
This came during a phone call when the UAE president congratulated his Lebanese counterpart on his election, according to the official Emirates News Agency (WAM).
Sheikh Mohamed "reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to supporting all efforts that ensure Lebanon's security and stability and realize the aspirations of its people."
WAM also quoted the Lebanese president as affirming a "commitment to strengthening bilateral relations in the coming phase and commended the UAE's support for Lebanon at all levels."
In October 2021, the UAE, along with Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain, announced separately severing their diplomatic ties with Lebanon following comments by then-Lebanese Information Minister George Kardahi on Saudi Arabia and the UAE's role in the war on Yemen.
Joseph Aoun was elected by the Lebanese parliament on Thursday, ending over two years of political vacuum since President Michel Aoun left office in October 2022.
