On day one of his 2nd term, President Trump withdraws US from Paris climate agreement, declares national emergency at border, fires 4 Biden-era appointees

President Donald Trump signed several executive actions, memoranda and proclamations on his first day in office.

- Declaring national emergency at southern US border

Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency at the southern US border that paves the way to deploy American troops there.


- Withdrawal from Paris climate agreement, WHO

Trump signed an executive order to withdraw the US from the Paris climate agreement and leave the World Health Organization (WHO).


- Trump is ending birthright citizenship

Under the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, any person born within the territory of the US is an American citizen.

"This next order relates to the definition of birthright citizenship under the 14th Amendment of the United States. That's a good one. Birthright. That's a big one," he said.


- Federal workers returning to office, government hiring put on hold

"I will implement an immediate regulation freeze, which will stop Biden bureaucrats from continuing to regulate," Trump said and added that he will "issue a temporary hiring freeze to ensure that we're only hiring competent people who are faithful to the American public."


- Pardon for supporters charged in Jan. 6 riot

Trump pardons 1,500 supporters charged in the Jan. 6, 2021 riot and shortens sentences for 14 supporters involved in the attack.


- Reinstatement of Cuba on state sponsors of terrorism list

Trump reinstated Cuba's designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, reversing an executive order issued by former President Joe Biden just days earlier.


- Trump fires 4 presidential appointees from Biden era

He stated that he was firing Jose Andres from the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, Mark Milley from the National Infrastructure Advisory Council, Brian Hook from the Wilson Center for Scholars, and Keisha Lance Bottoms from the President's Export Council.


- 75-day delay on TikTok ban

Trump signed an executive order in an attempt to delay a ban on the popular short-video app TikTok for 75 days.

"I think the US should be entitled to get half of TikTok," he told reporters while signing executive orders at the Oval Office.


- Restoring names to honor American 'greatness'

Trump ordered renaming initiatives such as reverting Mount Denali to Mount McKinley and the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, citing the need to honor American heritage and historical figures.


- Suspension of US foreign assistance pending review

"All department and agency heads with responsibility for United States foreign development assistance programs shall immediately pause new obligations and disbursements of development assistance funds to foreign countries," said Trump's executive order.


- Establishing Department of Government Efficiency

Trump signed a directive to establish the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an advisory body focused on reducing government costs, with Elon Musk set to lead it.


- Recognition of only 2 genders

Trump stated that the US will recognize only "two sexes, male and female."
