Meeting includes talks on Syria's rebuilding, regional stability, anti-terrorism cooperation
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Thursday met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani on the sidelines of the informal NATO foreign ministers meeting in the Turkish resort city of Antalya.
According to Turkish diplomatic sources, trilateral talks included delegations from all three countries and took place at the NEST Congress Center in Antalya.
The meeting, which lasted almost two hours, was extremely “cordial and constructive,” according to the sources.
The meeting addressed topics raised during the Riyadh meeting between US President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also attended online.
Expressing Syrians' desire to live in stability and prosperity, Fidan urged all sides to support the developments moving in the right direction in Syria.
“For this reason, it is important for the US to maintain its engagement with the Syrian administration,” he further said.
Emphasizing that Syria is determined to fight the ISIS (Daesh) terror group, Fidan said that their remaining capacities should not be targeted in order to strengthen this fight.
“Syria is making serious efforts toward the elimination of weapons of mass destruction. Türkiye will continue to do its utmost in this regard,” he added.
- US
Emphasizing the importance of Syrians' security in the region, the US stated its intention to help Syria stand on its own feet and wants to overcome the obstacles in its path, according to the sources.
They said the US is determined on this matter and building mutual trust is important.
Stressing the importance of showing a firm commitment in the fight against terrorism, they said they want all Syrians to live “peacefully and happily in their homeland.”
- Syria
The sources said that Syria expressed its willingness to integrate with the international community.
Noting that for the first time in 45 years, the Syrian people are governing themselves, Syria, according to the sources, said: “We are determined in our fight against ISIS (Daesh) and other terrorist organizations.”
Emphasizing the importance of lifting sanctions to rebuild a new Syria, they expressed a desire to contribute to stability in the region.
The trilateral meeting lasted about 30 minutes.
After Fidan left, Rubio and al-Shaibani continued talks. Rubio accompanied by Senator Lindsey Graham and he departed the NEST Congress Center at 7 p.m. local time, the sources said.
