Turkey is set to deploy air and naval forces to Qatar, in addition to the already existing Turkish troops in the Gulf monarchy, according to the Turkish Ambassador to Qatar.
Speaking to members of the press in Doha, Turkey’s Ambassador to Qatar Fikret Özer made a statement regarding the Turkish military presence in the Gulf country.
According to a report by Al Jazeera, and in accordance with the agreements signed between the two countries in 2014, Özer said that in addition to the soldiers already stationed in Qatar, naval and air forces will be deployed to the Gulf country.
When asked about the timeframe for the deployment and the number of Turkish soldiers currently present in Qatar, Özer said, “If our Qatari brothers choose to disclose it, you will be informed. We’re guests, they’re the hosts.”
In an unprecedented move for Turkey in the Middle East, Turkish soldiers were first deployed in 2015 to the Tarek Bin Ziyad military base, which is capable of hosting up to 5,000 troops.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Yemen announced in June 2017 that they cut diplomatic ties with Qatar, accusing Doha of supporting terrorism, charges that Qatar denies. They also imposed a land, sea and air blockade, causing the largest diplomatic crisis in recent years.
Turkey stepped up during the crisis by providing aid to Qatar as Ankara attempts to broker a solution to the crisis with other mediator countries.
