Writers urge end to trade of military equipment used against civilians

More than 400 Spanish professionals, who have contributed to children's and young adult literature, urged an "immediate end" to the "indiscriminate" Israeli attacks on Gaza.

"We make an urgent call to the international community to push for an immediate end to these indiscriminate attacks and to halt the trade of military equipment being used against the civilian population," the writers wrote in a manifesto shared through social media.

Pointing to Israel's "repeated" violation of international laws by bombing civilians and obstructing the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, writers reiterated the need to ensure Israel's accountability for the civilian killings and take measures so that the "cruel acts" never repeat around the world.

"There are no excuses. Children are not combatants," writers noted and said: " This is not the world we imagine. This is not the world we want."

Rejecting international calls for a ceasefire, Israel has pursued a devastating offensive in Gaza since October 2023, killing nearly 54,500 Palestinians, most of them women and children. Aid agencies have warned about the risk of famine among the enclave's more than 2 million.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war crimes against civilians in the enclave.
