Attempts were made to resuscitate the man, however these proved unsuccessful

A 42-year-old Australian man died after he went into cardiac arrest following “a puncture wound to his lower abdomen” while swimming off the coast of Tasmania, according to a statement released by the police.

The attack was in line with that of a stingray attack, officials told local media.

Preliminary reports stated that the wound was “possibly inflicted by a marine animal” and not “shark related.

He was swimming a short distance from the shore of Lauderdale beach, and attempts were made to resuscitate him, however these proved unsuccessful.

Stingrays aren’t considered to be dangerous, however Australian conservationist Steve Irwin died from a stingray attack to the heart in 2006.
