‘The Israeli army is working to destroy all means of survival,' Tulkarem deputy governor tells Anadolu

The Israeli army has demolished entire residential neighborhoods in Tulkarem city amid a deadly military offensive in the northern West Bank, a Palestinian official said on Wednesday.

"The Israeli army is working to destroy all means of survival, destroying streets and infrastructure and demolishing residential blocks,” Tulkarem Deputy Governor Faisal Salama told Anadolu.

Describing the situation in the city as “catastrophic”, he said entire residential blocks were brought down in the Tulkarem and Nur Shams refugee camps.

Salama said the Israeli army ordered 12 Palestinian families in the Tulkarem camp to leave the area.

“The army forced the majority of Palestinians in the two camps to flee to other areas inside the city or to neighboring towns,” he added.

The Israeli army has continued a deadly offensive in the northern West Bank since Jan. 21, killing at least 70 people and displacing thousands.

The assault came as the Israeli army renewed deadly airstrikes on Gaza on Tuesday, killing at least 436 people, injuring over 670 others, and shattering a ceasefire agreement that took hold in January.

Tension has been running high across the occupied West Bank, where at least 937 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 7,000 injured in attacks by the Israeli army and illegal settlers since the start of the Gaza onslaught on Oct. 7, 2023, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry.

In July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel's longstanding occupation of Palestinian territories illegal, calling for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
