6.3 magnitude earthquake damages dozens of houses in Indonesia

Earthquake occurred at 2.52 a.m., epicenter 43 km southwest of city of Bengkulu

At least 100 houses were damaged when a strong 6.3 magnitude earthquake hit Indonesia early Friday, state news agency Antara reported.

The quake jolted Bengkulu province on Sumatra Island.

"We record at least 100 houses damaged (by the quake), of which less than half suffered from major damages," said provincial governor Helmi Hasan.

He said there were no casualties, but some residents sustained minor injuries.

“We are waiting for more updates from other residents about damaged houses,” said Hasan, pledging help rebuild homes with significant damage and repair those with minor damage.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake occurred at 2.52 a.m. (1952GMT Thursday), and the epicenter was 43 km southwest of the city of Bengkulu.

No tsunami warning was issued.
