At least 19 people also wounded in Tillaberi region, says army
A gendarme and four civilians were killed after terrorists attacked the Tillaberi region of Niger, the Nigerien Armed Forces General Staff said on Saturday evening.
“In the afternoon of July 14, 2023, a detachment of the national gendarmerie on a convoy escort mission on the Torodi-Makalondi stretch was the target of a complex terrorist attack," the army said in a statement.
Following an "energetic retaliation," two terrorists were killed and 19 people were wounded, including seven gendarmes, five soldiers and seven civilians, all of whom were evacuated to Niamey, the capital, according to the statement.
The Makalondi police station is the last Nigerien town before the Burkina Faso border in the Sahelian zone, which has been plagued by terrorism for several years. The Tillaberi region has on several occasions been the target of terrorist attacks perpetrated by the terror group EIGS.
This insecurity has led to the displacement of over 10,800 people since the beginning of July, according to local and humanitarian sources.
