Russian jets targeted Daesh targets in al-Bab, which is located approximately 40 kilometers northeast of Aleppo, Syria.
Reports initially emerged describing the air strikes as a joint operation between the Turkish and Russian Air Forces; however, the Turkish military released a statement clarifying that Turkish jets were not involved and Russian jets alone carried out the air strikes in al-Bab.
A senior Russian Defense Ministry official, Lieutenant-General Sergei Rudskoi, said it was the first time Russian and Turkish air forces had teamed together.
Russian jets have also conducted airstrikes near the town of Palmyra, as Daesh could destroy more of the historic city's ancient monuments, Rudskoi said.
Russian jets conducted air strikes on Daesh targets to the south of Al-Bab, Syria, for the first time on December 29 as part of the Turkish-led Euphrates Shield Operation.
The operation is aided by the Free Syrian Army (FSA), and aims to improve security, support coalition forces and eliminate the threat of terror along Turkey's border.
