Turkish construction equipment has crossed the border of Syria’s northwestern city of Afrin in order to build a bridge for Turkish Armed Forces (TAF)’s tanks and armored vehicles as the air-assisted ground operation launched by Turkey begins against the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)’s Syrian offshoot, the PYD, in the occupied city.
As Turkish howitzers and war planes strike PKK/PYD targets in Afrin, it also provides cover for the bridge to be securely built by earthmovers, which will help Turkish troops and tanks to cross comfortably to the Qara Baba town in PKK/PYD-occupied Afrin’s countryside.
Turkey launched its Afrin operation in Syria’s northwestern district on Saturday to eradicate the area of terrorist PKK/PYD elements, following Turkey’s seven-month Euphrates Shield Operation which succeeded in clearing large swathes of Syrian territory from Daesh.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. The PKK has been conducting armed violence in the southeastern part of Turkey since 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the three-decade long conflict.
