‘It's ridiculous, and it has to end,’ US president says as he plans to abolish birthright citizenship
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday said that he plans to sign an executive order to abolish the right to citizenship for babies of illegal immigrants and non-immigrants born on U.S. soil.
"We're the only country in the world where a person comes in and has a baby, and the baby is essentially a citizen of the United States ... with all of those benefits," Trump said in an interview with Axios on HBO.
Mr. Trump’s claim is a false one as more than 30 countries, including most of the Americas, allow citizenship to babies born within their borders.
"It's ridiculous. It's ridiculous. And it has to end,” he added.
"All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside," according to the Immigration and Nationality Act of the Fourteenth Amendment, which was adopted in 1868, of the American constitution.
