Rishi Sunak, Emmanuel Macron aim to find 'new approaches to challenges including migration, energy security, threat from Russia,' says statement

In a visit to France, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak met with President Emmanuel Macron on Friday, with migration, energy security, and Russia on the agenda, according to an official statement.

The two leaders discussed "new approaches to challenges including migration, energy security and the threat from Russia," during the UK-France Summit, which aims to mend ties between the countries following post-Brexit tensions, said a press released by the British government.

The meeting is important as it is the first such summit since 2018 and is expected to mark a "new chapter" in relations between the two countries.

Talks are likely to focus on improving military and business ties, as well as efforts to tackle the issue of migrants crossing the English Channel.

"Our deep history, our proximity and our shared global outlook mean that a firm partnership between the UK and France is not just valuable, it is essential," Sunak said in a statement.

"From tackling the scourge of illegal migration to driving investment in one another’s economies the work we do together improves the lives of each and every person in our countries. Beyond that, the UK and France also have a privileged role as defenders of European and global security," he added.

The gathering comes at a time when the UK is seeking to build new partnerships with countries outside the EU following its exit from the bloc.

France is a key partner for the UK, and improving ties with Paris could help to strengthen its position in Europe and beyond.
