Embassy says it cannot currently assist US citizens in leaving Israel
The US Embassy in Israel on Sunday directed all American government employees and their families in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza to shelter in place due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
"As a result of the current security situation...the U.S. Embassy has directed that all U.S. government employees and their family members continue to shelter in place in and near their residences until further notice,” the embassy said in a statement.
It said it cannot currently evacuate or assist US citizens in leaving the country.
On Saturday, the US State Department authorized the voluntary departure of some non-emergency staff and relatives.
Israel's strikes on Iranian nuclear and missile sites have killed several commanders, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory attacks with missiles and drones targeting Israeli territory.
