Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım lauded the presidential system of government that Turkey will switch to on June 24 following a snap election.
“There is no return from uninterrupted democracy, the rule of law, and the prevailing of national will. Nobody will be able to turn Turkey away from its goals of growing greater and stronger,” said Yıldırım.
“With the presidential governing system, we are taking a new step to make our political system more powerful. With this system of equilibrium and control, we will bring about a stronger parliament, and this change will be implemented on June 24,” he added.
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced on Wednesday a plan to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on June 24, over a year ahead of schedule.
On April 16, 2017, Turkey held a referendum on a constitutional reform in which the majority of voters pronounced themselves in favor of an 18-article bill switching a parliamentary system into a presidential one.
“April 16 was a turning point. Turkey has abandoned the parliamentary system, which was unable to carry Turkey forward into the future,” Yıldırım said.
