Wellington plans to procure 5 new choppers
New Zealand unveiled a $2 billion plan Sunday to replace its aging Seasprite navy helicopters in response to "increasing global tensions,” according to media reports.
Defense Minister Judith Collins said the funding was for the first tranche of the government's renewed commitment to rachet up defense spending, and boost disaster response and aid capabilities, Radio New Zealand (RNZ) reported.
Another $957 million over four years will be spent on defense force activities, personnel and property.
Collins announced the spending in a pre-budget announcement alongside Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, and top brass from the defense force at Whenuapai Air Force base in Auckland.
"Global tensions are increasing rapidly, and defense personnel need the right equipment and conditions to do their jobs," Collins was quoted by RNZ.
She said the government plans to procure five new helicopters, but exactly when they would arrive would depend on a business case being developed before the end of the year.
The navy previously had a fleet of eight Seasprite helicopters but that is now down to five.
"It is very clear that New Zealand is not immune from the increasing tensions being felt throughout the world," she said.
"As a maritime nation we are prioritising naval capability. The new helicopters will be able to go further and carry larger loads, including weapons, personnel and equipment - all of which is critical for Defense to protect New Zealand and New Zealanders, she said.
The spending was the first confirmation from the $12 billion the government announced in its "Defense Capability Plan" unveiled nearly a month ago.
It set New Zealand on a path to spending 2% of GDP on defense by 2032-33.
