Egyptian imam Mustafa attempts to donate his wife’s jewelry in support of Turkish economy

A Kuwaiti citizen of Egyptian descent offered to donate his wife’s jewelry in order to support the Turkish lira, which has recently lost ground against the dollar amid a raft of newly-imposed U.S. sanctions.

Arriving at the Turkish Embassy, the Egyptian imam residing in Kuwait, Sayyid Muhammad Mustafa, attempted to donate his wife’s gold jewelry in order to provide support for Turkey against plots designed against the Turkish economy.

When asked about reasons for his initiative, Mustafa said “my love for our Turkish brothers and sisters. You [Turks] are the hope of all Muslims.”

Mustafa said he deeply admires Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, going on to call on the Turkish people to “know the value of President Erdogan.”

Thanking the Egyptian imam for his effort, Commercial Attache of the Turkish Embassy Atilla Ugur Basbug said he was unable to accept his donation.

Mustafa said he would continue to support Turkey by buying Turkish liras and products.

Turkey-U.S. are currently experiencing rocky relations since Washington imposed sanctions on Turkey’s interior and justice ministers last week after Ankara refused to release an American pastor who faces terrorism-related charges in Turkey.

Last Friday, U.S. President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on aluminum and steel imports from Turkey.
