Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will address members of the US Congress on Wednesday amid Russia’s continued war on his country.

According to a letter to members of the House and Senate from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the virtual address will take place at 9 am Eastern Time (1300GMT).

"The Congress remains unwavering in our commitment to supporting Ukraine as they face (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's cruel and diabolical aggression," said Pelosi and Schumer’s letter.

"We look forward to the privilege of welcoming President Zelenskyy’s address to the House and Senate and to convey our support to the people of Ukraine as they bravely defend democracy," said the letter.

The Russia-Ukraine war, which began on Feb. 24, has drawn international condemnation, led to financial sanctions on Moscow, and spurred an exodus of global firms from Russia.

At least 596 civilians have been killed and 1,067 injured in Ukraine since the beginning of the war, according to the UN, while noting that conditions on the ground make it difficult to verify the true number.

Some 2.8 million people have also fled to neighboring countries, said the UN refugee agency.
