Joint military drills, which were launched on Sept. 18, still underway
The military drill launched by Turkey near the border with Iraq is still underway.
The joint exercises carried out under command of the 28th Mechanized Brigade Commander Brigadier Gen. Ahmet Kurumahmut and the 7th Army Corps Commander Maj. Gen. Sinan Yayla are continuing with troops from the Iraqi Armed Forces. Troops received armored vehicle training.
Turkey’s military drills were launched three kilometers away from the border in the southeastern Silopi region in the early hours of Sept. 18, a week before the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) non-binding independence referendum.
Iraqi soldiers arrived in Turkey on Sept. 23 for joint military exercises due to be carried out the following day in Habur.
Iraq’s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi arrived in Turkey on Wednesday.
During his visit, Abadi will address boosting the cooperation between Turkey and Iraq in contribution to regional peace, stability and security, and the recent developments following the illegitimate referendum held in the KRG on Sept. 25 and possible joint steps regarding the matter.
