Russian troops withdrew on Wednesday from the strategic northern Syrian city of Tal Rifaat, which is currently occupied by terrorists from the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK)’s Syrian offshoot, the PYD, as Turkey’s Operation Olive Branch in northwestern Afrin enters its sixth day.
Around 80 Russian troops, who were previously deployed to Tal Rifaat, completed their withdrawal from the region, which lies between Afrin and Azaz, to the adjacent regime-controlled towns of Nubbol and Az-Zahraa, following communications between Ankara and Moscow, and thus marking a complete withdrawal of all Russian presence in the Afrin area.
The Turkish Armed Forces (TAF), who have established observation posts in northern Idlib, advanced towards the east and are now located 25 kilometers west of Aleppo.
An observational post was set up in the Aleppo countryside town of al-Lis, which has enabled the Turkish army to more effectively encircle PKK/PYD terrorists from the north.
Backed into a corner in Afrin, PKK/PYD terrorists attempted to advance and attack military bases in the north, in addition to regions where TAF is located.
No losses were reported on Wednesday following artillery shelling by PKK/PYD terrorists against TAF bases in the towns of Daret Izzah and Salwa on the Idlib- Afrin border.
Operation Olive Branch was initiated on Jan. 20 in Afrin to establish security and stability, eliminate PKK/KCK/PYD-YPG and Daesh terrorists, and save locals from their oppression and cruelty.
The operation is being carried out under the framework of Turkey’s rights based on international law, UN Security Council resolutions, its self-defense rights under the UN charter, and respect for Syria's territorial integrity.
Afrin has been a major hideout for the PYD/PKK since July 2012, when the Assad regime in Syria left the city to the terror group without putting up a fight.
Cross-border attacks by the PYD/PKK terror group in southern Turkey started as the Turkish army operation in Syria’s northwestern town of Afrin continues.
At least 287 PKK/KCK/PYD-YPG and Daesh terrorists have been neutralized since the beginning of the Operation Olive Branch in Syria, Turkish General Staff said Wednesday.
The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the European Union and the United States. The PKK has been conducting armed violence in the southeastern part of Turkey since 1984. More than 40,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the three-decade long conflict.
