Jordan's foreign minister holds talks with his Iranian counterpart in Amman
Jordan warned Wednesday that it will not allow any party to violate its sovereignty and airspace amid increasing tensions between Iran and Israel.
Jordan “will not be a war zone for anyone and will not allow any party to violate its sovereignty and airspace or threaten the security of its citizens,” Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi.
Araghchi arrived in Amman on Wednesday as part of a regional tour. He is scheduled to visit Egypt on Thursday.
Safadi emphasized that stopping the Israeli assaults in Gaza and Lebanon, military escalation against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, and violations against Islamic and Christian holy sites “is the first step toward de-escalation and restoring calm in the region.”
The two ministers discussed efforts to end regional escalation and “protect the region from slipping into an all-out war that would benefit no one and threaten regional and international peace and security,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
They agreed to "launch a structured dialogue to address all bilateral issues, aimed at developing relations based on mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs, and cooperation that positively reflects on both brotherly countries."
Iran is on high alert in anticipation of an Israeli military response to the Oct. 1 missile attack by Tehran, which said the attack was in retaliation for the recent assassinations of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders, and Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander.
Regional tensions have escalated due to Israel's brutal offensive on the Gaza Strip, which has killed more than 42,400 people, mostly women and children, following a Hamas attack last year.
The conflict has spread to Lebanon, with Israel launching deadly strikes across the country, which have killed more than 1,500 people and injured over 4,500 others since last month.
