'Urgent action is needed' to uphold right to food for all, says Volker Turk, marking annual World Food Day

The UN human rights chief on Wednesday marked World Food Day with a call to establish food systems prioritizing accessibility as some 735 million people worldwide suffer from hunger.

"On World Food Day, 735 million people suffer from hunger, and 2.8 billion can't afford a healthy diet," Volker Turk wrote on X.

"We must build food systems that prioritise accessibility, adequacy, availability, and sustainability to uphold the right to food for all," Turk said, adding: "Urgent action is needed."

World Food Day is celebrated annually across the world, drawing attention to efforts to end hunger and make sure that every individual can practice their right to access food.
