'There is no quick and easy solution in Ukraine,' says Emmanuel Macron
French President Emmanuel Macron called on Ukraine Monday to engage in “realistic” discussions on territorial issues, emphasizing that only Ukrainians can lead such negotiations.
Speaking to ambassadors at the Elysee Palace, Macron stressed that any peace deal must be formed in close consultation with Ukraine. “No solution should be imposed on Ukraine without the Ukrainians,” he said.
“There is no quick and easy solution in Ukraine,” Macron stated, rejecting notions of a swift settlement despite recent remarks from US President-elect Donald Trump. He urged the US to help pressure Russia to return to negotiations and emphasized Europe's responsibility to provide Ukraine with security guarantees.
"The new president knows that the United States has no chance of gaining anything if Ukraine loses," Macron added, warning that Western credibility would be undermined by compromises rooted in “fatigue” from the prolonged conflict.
- Criticism of Elon Musk
Macron also took aim at billionaire Elon Musk, accusing him of supporting a “new international reactionary movement” and interfering in elections, including Germany's upcoming snap legislative polls.
"Ten years ago, who could have imagined it if we had been told that the owner of one of the largest social networks in the world would support a new international reactionary movement and intervene directly in elections, including in Germany," Macron said, referencing Musk's ownership of the platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
- Middle east
Turning to the Middle East, Macron condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and called for an immediate ceasefire.
“There is no military justification for the deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid,” he said, urging for a political resolution centered on the recognition of a viable Palestinian state.
"Europe must work alongside partners such as Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, and Qatar to implement the two-state solution, ensuring both Israeli security and the legitimate aspirations of Palestinians," he added.
Macron expressed concern over Iran's accelerating nuclear program, calling for urgent dialogue with the incoming U.S. administration. “Iran's actions are a major strategic and security challenge for France and Europe. We must remain vigilant,” he warned.
Upcoming International Conference
Macron announced plans for France, in partnership with Saudi Arabia, to host a major international conference in June 2025 in New York. The summit will focus on advancing security and cooperation in the Middle East, including discussions on long-term solutions for regional stability.
The French president's remarks underscored a broad vision for global engagement amid rising international tensions, from Ukraine to the Middle East.
