As many as 30,000 troops from 36 countries are participating in the Mosul operation that is underway, aiming to sweep Daesh terrorists from the Iraqi city. According to the agreement of the United States and Daesh, around 3,000 Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) terrorists will play a role in the operation.
Also, around 700 special operations forces, a majority of which are U.S., English and French troops, will be active in the operation. More than 400 U.S. soldiers will lead the armored forces and artillery.
Turkish Yeni Şafak daily newspaper reached the numbers of troops from different groups which are playing a role in the operation:
16 special operation regiments of 250 people of the Iraqi Army
32 infantry regiments of 250-300 troops from the Iraqi army
16 tank battalions, each of which includes 150 troops of the Iraqi army
4 armored battalions from the ninth division of the Iraqi army
12 emergency regiments of the Nineveh police unit
12 emergency regiments of the third army
8 Nineveh police battalion
8 mechanized regiments of the Iraqi Federal Police
Long-range artillery batteries of coalition forces and Iraqi military
1 Peshmerga division and 2 Hashdi al-Shaabi militia divisions
10 fleets of the U.S.-led coalition, 3 fleets of the Iraqi Air Force
10 offensive helicopter fleets of coalition forces and the Iraqi army
The Mosul operation was initiated early on Monday, aiming at clearing the city from Daesh terrorists, which captured the city in 2014 and overran vast swathes of territory in northern and western Iraq.
Recent months have seen the army, backed by a 60-nation air coalition led by the U.S., retake much territory. Nevertheless, the Daesh terrorist group remains in control of several parts of the country, including Mosul.
