The ex-striker of Galatasaray, Hakan Sukur''s name was removed from a stadium in Sancaktape district of Istanbul on Wednesday, three months after he had resigned from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The 7,000-seater facility, opened in the Istanbul''s Asian quarter in 2010, had been named as ''Sancaktepe Municipality Hakan Sukur Stadium''. It has hosted players between the teams fighting in the Spor Toto Third League.

The municipal officials confirmed the alteration in the stadium''s name. ''The new name will be determined later'', they said.

The 42 year-old retired player told his followers into his Twitter account: ''Rather than having your portrait on the wall, make your name heard in the world.''

Sükür, known as a loyal to the US-based scholar Gülen, has remained closely aligned with what PM called ''parallel structure'' against the ruling AK Party and resigned from the ruling AK Party one day before the massive graft investigation on Dec. 17, 2013.
