'Request encompasses thousands of employees across the country,' says acting FBI director in email obtained by ABC News

The US Justice Department is reportedly seeking information about thousands of FBI employees who worked on the Jan. 6 Capitol riot investigations, according to an internal email obtained by ABC News on Friday.

The email, reportedly sent by acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll, claims the information must be provided to Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove's office by Tuesday to determine if "personnel actions" are needed.

"We understand that this request encompasses thousands of employees across the country who have supported these investigative efforts," said the email, which also included information on eight senior FBI executives who were ordered to be terminated.

Answering a question regarding the reports, President Donald Trump praised the dismissals. "They used the Justice Department to correct their political opponents, which in itself is illegal," he said.

Separately, about 40 prosecutors from the US Attorney's Office in Washington, DC who worked on Jan. 6 cases were reportedly dismissed Friday.

Trump's FBI director nominee, Kash Patel, pledged Thursday during his confirmation hearing that "no one will be terminated for cases" and promised protection against political retribution.

The FBI declined to comment on personnel matters when contacted by ABC News.
