Foreign Minister Sybiha says he held conference call with foreign ministers from France, Germany, Poland, UK, US to discuss Ukraine's ceasefire offer and potential next steps in diplomacy
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced on Monday that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is ready to meet with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, this week, and urged international partners to support the initiative.
Sybiha said in a statement on X that he held a conference call with foreign ministers from France, Germany, Poland, the UK, the US to discuss Ukraine's ceasefire offer and potential next steps in diplomacy.
"It was critical to begin this decisive week with a meaningful conversation in this format about the next steps in advancing peace," he said, pointing out that Moscow has yet to respond to Zelenskyy's willingness to meet with Putin.
He said Ukrainian military command reports show Russia is “ignoring our ceasefire offer and continuing to attack all along the frontline.”
“For diplomacy to be effective and to give peace a chance, there needs to be silence on the frontline,” Sybiha added, emphasizing the need for a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire.
He said the ministers also discussed coordinated peace efforts and additional measures, including sanctions, if Russia continues to reject negotiations.
Putin offered Ukraine on Sunday to resume direct peace talks in Istanbul, starting May 15.
On Saturday, Zelenskyy, along with leaders from Germany, France, Poland, and the UK, suggested declaring a 30-day ceasefire starting today.
Meanwhile, in response to Zelenskyy's call, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow is "open for dialogue, we are open for attempts to have a settlement in Ukraine."
