Two building collapsed in Beyoğlu close to Istiklal Avenue, a busy shopping area

Two buildings, one a five-story structure, have collapsed in Beyoğlu district of Istanbul province.

The incident occurred on Zambak Street, close to Istiklal Avenue, a busy shopping and nightlife district.

"No one is believed to have been killed or injured when the two buildings collapsed," Istanbul Governor Vasip Şahin said.

"We are trying to find out more information about the incident. One of the collapsed buildings was used as a restaurant and storage space, and there was a hotel but it was unoccupied at the moment of the incident," Governor said.

Beyoğlu Mayor Ahmet Misbah Demircan said that an early warning from nearby carpark workers saved the lives of the people staying and working at the building, who were able to evacuate in time.

The cause of the collapse was not clear.
