'The UN should take radical steps to raise its reputation around the world,' Turkish PM says, indicating the ongoing civil war in Syria

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım on Tuesday calls on the United States to take radical steps that could help the world body to regain its reputation.

“Nowadays, the UN is holding its general assembly. The most important duty of the UN is to take radical decisions to increase its reputation,” Turkish PM said at the 26th Universal Postal Congress in Istanbul.

He stated that the UN should not allow the killing of civilians in power struggles in several areas around the world.

“I hope the UN will work suitably for the purpose of its establishment,” Yıldırım said.

The Turkish PM said that the refugee crisis is the main problem that the world should solve first.

“You cannot be safe fleeing terrorism. All together we should stand against terrorism. Then terrorists would be scared of us and we would be stronger.”

“No single point in the world is safe now. We cannot build a terror-free world by turning our eyes away from global problems. Terrorism should be rooted out from all corners of the world,” said Binali Yıldırım

“But we cannot root out terrorism until we solve the problems of 60 million refugees around the world,” he added.

The PM touched upon the Syrian crisis, saying that 10 million people had been displaced from their houses only in Syria since the civil war started in 2011.

Turkey is hosting about 3 million Syrians, becoming the largest refugee host country in the world, and spent more than $10 billion from the domestic resources, according the government sources.

“We are a nation that opens their laps to oppressed people,” the PM said adding, “But some [people] don't understand this.”
