US, Indonesian presidents spoke over the phone, says White House
U.S. President Donald Trump offered his condolences Tuesday to his Indonesian counterpart over the recent deadly earthquake and tsunami on Sulawesi island.
In a statement, the White House said Trump had a phone conversation with President Joko Widodo in which he expressed his condolences and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
Trump proposed to work closely with the Indonesian government to provide immediate assistance, the statement added.
The death toll from the 7.4-magnitude earthquake and tsunami has risen to 1,347, according to the country’s Disaster Management Agency (BNPB).
The disaster in Central Sulawesi could be Indonesia’s second-largest tragedy after the 2004 Aceh tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people.
