Clashes erupt between protesters, police near Netanyahu's residence in west Jerusalem

Thousands of Israelis continued protests in west Jerusalem on Thursday against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's decision to sack the Shin Bet chief and resume attacks on the Gaza Strip.

The mass protests came as the government is set to vote on Thursday on the sacking of Ronen Bar, the head of the Shin Bet domestic security agency.

They also followed massive Israeli airstrikes that killed more than 700 people and injured 900 others in Gaza since Tuesday despite a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement.

According to Israeli daily Haaretz, thousands of protesters demonstrated near Netanyahu's residence in west Jerusalem amid clashes with police.

Videos showed Israeli police assaulting protesters, including Yair Golan, leader of the opposition Democrats Party and former deputy army chief. One police officer was seen throwing him to the ground.

Israeli police set up barriers several hundred meters from Netanyahu's residence to prevent protesters from reaching it.

Protests also erupted in Tel Aviv, joined by families of Israeli captives in Gaza amid calls for maintaining the ceasefire deal with Hamas and facilitating a prisoner exchange with Palestinians.

Nearly 50,000 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and nearly 113,000 others injured in a brutal Israeli military campaign in Gaza since October 2023.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
