‘We will also revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong,' says US Secretary of State

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Wednesday that the State Department will begin revoking visas of Chinese students.

“Under President (Donald) Trump's leadership, the U.S. State Department will work with the Department of Homeland Security to aggressively revoke visas for Chinese students, including those with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields,” Rubio said in a statement.

“We will also revise visa criteria to enhance scrutiny of all future visa applications from the People's Republic of China and Hong Kong,” he added.

Earlier this year, the administration revoked the visas of thousands of international students, including some targeted for participating in pro-Palestinian campus protests or writing Op-Eds criticizing Israel. Among them was Turkish PhD student Rumeysa Ozturk of Tufts University.

Last week, the Trump administration also moved to revoke Harvard University's authorization to enroll international students. A federal judge has temporarily blocked the decision.

On Wednesday, Trump proposed capping foreign student admissions at 15%, calling some international students “troublemakers” and “radical people.”
